AI and a future of gender (in)equality

In the maelstrom of automation, artificial intelligence (AI) transcends mere data manipulation to reflect the values embedded in our society. Language models, now more than mere tools, shape the identity of new generations in an environment where ideas and contrasts converge.

This apparently neutral interaction reveals a paradox: far from being impartial, AI can reproduce and accentuate existing inequalities under a façade of objectivity. By processing historical data, it does not project an equitable future, but reorganises information imbued with asymmetries.

The impact on the construction of identities

AI not only responds, it also influences the construction of imaginaries, especially among youth. In certain contexts, the message directed at women adopts an emotive tone that, paradoxically, reinforces a narrative of vulnerability. On the other hand, men are urged to show emotional restraint, perpetuating certain expectations of masculinity.

The employment gap

In the corporate world, where technology is key, AI already shows a significant gap in skills assessment. Faced with equivalent CVs, women are systematically undervalued, which could perpetuate inequalities in the labour market.

AI as an ally in equity

To blame AI as an enemy would be simplistic. Intelligent automation, conceived from an equity perspective, has the potential to transform society. By analysing massive data, it can detect and highlight inequalities, becoming a tool to accelerate equality of opportunity.

To prevent AI from reflecting and perpetuating our biases, it is crucial to develop deep critical literacy. Programming equity from its conception is the current challenge, so that technology becomes a driver of change and not a mere reproduction of our asymmetries.

In this context of transformation, it is imperative to internalise that equality is also designed. The real goal is for AI to transcend our prejudices and become the ultimate tool to achieve real equity in the future.
