In a joint effort, universities, associations and institutions from Spain and Portugal are leading an innovative project to restore the Douro environment through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The main objective of the OETERRA project is to develop a monitoring network for the cultural landscape and green infrastructure in the Douro basin. Through monitoring stations, it will promote the restoration of degraded habitats in natural and urban environments, all within the framework of a cross-border strategy for the biosphere reserve.
Environmental Education and Awareness Raising
In addition to the restoration work, the project includes a comprehensive environmental education and awareness programme. This programme will include citizen science initiatives, educational workshops and the formation of a network of environmental educators committed to the sustainability of the environment.
Cross-border Collaboration
The European project OETERRA, led by the Santa María la Real Foundation, involves the participation of eight associations, universities and institutions from Spain and Portugal. This collaboration seeks to promote ecological restoration, territorial connectivity and the integration of the cultural landscape in the green infrastructure of the Douro basin.
Technology at the Service of the Environment
The University of Valladolid stands out in the development of AI models to improve land management. Thanks to the work of experts such as Daniel Álvarez González and Mario Martínez Zarzuela, advanced machine learning techniques are being applied to analyse and predict the evolution of the landscape, identify key environmental indicators and anticipate possible future risks in ecosystems.
The OETERRA project represents an important step towards a more sustainable management of the territory, using AI as an ally to address the environmental and socio-economic challenges of the region. This initiative not only seeks to generate innovative solutions, but also to lay the foundations for a more environmentally conscious and responsible future.
In a context where AI is positioning itself as a key tool in the field of digital marketing, projects such as OETERRA demonstrate the transformative potential of this technology in the conservation and restoration of ecosystems. The combination of artificial intelligence and environmental sustainability opens up new possibilities for the protection of biodiversity and adaptation to climate change.
