Galicia is taking a step forward by authorising the use of artificial intelligence in education to identify learning challenges and personalise courses according to the needs of each student. This initiative, backed by the Regional Minister of Education, Román Rodríguez, is part of the new digital education law that is expected to be approved this year in Galicia.
The aim is to consolidate a more adapted and efficient education system, where artificial intelligence acts as a complementary ally, providing support in decision-making but always under human supervision to mitigate possible risks. This approach was highlighted during the Artificial Intelligence and Education Congress held recently in Santiago de Compostela.
The regulation provides for the restricted use of digital devices by pupils, allowing their use on an individual basis from the fifth year of primary education onwards. It also establishes clear guidelines on the permitted and prohibited uses of artificial intelligence in the educational environment, as a fundamental part of this evolution towards a more personalised and effective education.
Permitted and prohibited uses of AI in education
Among the permitted uses of artificial intelligence are the early detection of learning difficulties and the adaptation of educational resources according to the level and pace of each student. It can also be used to generate personalised teaching material and facilitate teaching, always under the supervision of teachers.
On the other hand, it prohibits academic decision-making based solely on results generated by artificial intelligence, guaranteeing the direct intervention of teachers in fundamental aspects of the educational process. In addition, it prohibits the use of AI for purposes such as predicting cognitive conditions or carrying out invasive monitoring that violates the privacy and rights of students.
In this sense, the implementation of artificial intelligence in the field of education represents a significant advance in the search for more personalised and efficient teaching, adapted to the needs of each student, promoting more inclusive and effective learning.
The future of digital education in Galicia
The introduction of artificial intelligence in the education sector in Galicia marks a milestone in the evolution of education, opening up new possibilities for improving the quality of the education system and ensuring more personalised and effective learning. This approach, endorsed by the education authorities, reflects Galicia's commitment to driving innovation and technology in education.
In short, the incorporation of artificial intelligence in Galician education represents a step forward towards a more adapted, inclusive and efficient educational model, where technology acts as an ally to enhance students' learning and development.
